This area is of great landscape and historical value and represents an important testament to the urban and defensive evolution of the region over the centuries. The complex system of fortifications, harmoniously integrated into the surrounding landscape, dates back to a long development process that began in the 13th century. It was Pope Honorius III who ordered its construction as part of a strategic plan to defend the towns of the Marche from Saracen raids. Later, between 1433 and 1446, Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, ordered major structural reinforcements and the expansion of the fortifications. These included added defensive bastions and towers to better protect the population and urban settlements.

Once equipped with several strategic forts — such as Il Cassero (still partially visible near Palazzo Secreti), Il Girone (between Porta del Pero and Porta Sant’Andrea), and Rocca Coccaro (now the San Rocco public park) — the walls reached a perimeter of 1,553 meters by the end of 1896, with 11 towers controlling access points to the town. The southern side is marked by Porta San Basso (also called Porta Vecchia), while the two other main entrances are Porta del Pero (north, toward Fermo) and Porta Sant’Andrea (west, toward Petritoli). These gates and the surviving sections of the wall remain as symbols of Monterubbiano’s historical identity and its community’s commitment to protecting it.

Church of Santa Maria dei Letterati

Built in the 18th century on the foundations of earlier churches destroyed by an earthquake, Santa Maria dei Letterati was elevated to a Collegiate Church by Pope Benedict XIII in 1728. Despite its current state, it remains a key religious and architectural landmark in Monterubbiano.

Parish Church of Saints Stephen and Vincent

Dating back to the 11th century, this is the oldest church in Monterubbiano. Originally Romanesque, it underwent many modifications over the centuries. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, a stone portal with recessed arches and reused Corinthian capitals was added on the south side, reflecting Lombard artistic influence. A square-based bell tower was built in the 14th century, giving the building a commanding presence. In 1650, restorations by Francesco and Rodolfo Aracinti likely altered the Romanesque portal. Major 1855 renovations raised the central nave, replaced altars, and shortened the bell tower. Since 1926, efforts have been made to restore the church’s original appearance. Between 1969 and 1975, structural consolidation, roof repair, and wall dehumidification works were carried out. Inside, the church features three naves separated by terracotta columns topped with Romanesque stone capitals, creating a solemn and evocative atmosphere. Despite many alterations, the semicircular apse and monofore windows preserve the church’s original character, making it a key site in Monterubbiano’s historical and religious heritage.

Church of Santa Maria dei Monti

This 16th-century church stands just outside the town walls, opposite the neoclassical cemetery complex designed by local architect Luca Galli. It was home to Father Reginaldo of Monterubbiano, who mentored the future Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. The building deteriorated over time and was deemed unsafe by the 1500s. Restoration began in the late 18th century and continued into the early 19th century. From 1925 to 1939, the church was beautifully restored in Neoclassical style under Don Giuseppe Marzetti, with architecture by Carlo Calzecchi Onesti and interior decoration by Antonio La Nave of Bari. Reopened on September 23, 2007, after earthquake repairs, the center is a prime example of Franciscan convent architecture. Founded by Blessed Lucido and Matteo, followers of St. Francis, the church features overlapping layers of 15th-century frescoes and 18th-century wooden and stucco altars. The cloister houses a tactile herb garden with olfactory pathways at varying heights, reflecting the Franciscans’ herbal knowledge. In December 2012, the Cultural Center was named a “Meraviglia Italiana” (Italian Wonder) by the National Youth Forum, joining a list of 1,000 exceptional Italian landmarks. The museum documents Monterubbiano’s history from prehistory to the Middle Ages and includes a coin collection of about 500 pieces donated by Dr. Stefano Mircoli. Designed for inclusive access, it features audio guides, braille panels, and tactile exhibits for visually impaired visitors. The chronological layout includes a large model of the Aso Valley with light boxes highlighting archaeological sites.

Teatro Pagani

Inaugurated in 1875 along Via Roma, the Teatro Pagani stands on the site of the 16th-century Palazzo known as “il Palazzaccio,” once owned by the Pagani family, to whom the famous painter Vincenzo Pagani belonged. The theater’s striking exterior combines late Gothic lines with a neoclassical pediment bearing the name “Teatro Pagani” in plaster. Visitors enter through one of three doorways directly into the horseshoe-shaped auditorium, a popular layout at the time. The theater features three tiers of boxes and a total of 231 seats. The first row boasts ornate wooden railings with fretwork and gold decorations. The ceiling, completed in 1879 using the traditional cane and plaster method, was painted by Gregorio Marinelli of Sant’Elpidio a Mare and depicts Comedy, Tragedy, and Music. The historic curtain, created in 1881 by Alessandro Bazzani, pays tribute to Vincenzo Pagani, who is shown painting at work. Above the stage, original stage machinery remains intact. Still vibrant today, this neoclassical gem hosts performances of drama and poetry and reflects Monterubbiano’s love for culture.

Giacomo Leopardi Public Gardens – San Rocco Park

This historic Italian-style park occupies a large area north of the historic center. The park is home to local bird species and both red and gray squirrels. Evergreen thanks to holm oaks, pine trees, lindens, and Judas trees, it offers cool summer shade and peaceful silence. Within the park, bronze busts honor prominent Monterubbiano citizens—scientists, artists, and scholars—such as architect Luca Galli, doctors Eugenio Centanni and Stefano Mircoli, and physicists Oreste Murani and Temistocle Calzecchi Onesti. A stone is engraved with a sonnet by Luigi Centanni. Opposite this entrance, another elegant facade closes the rectangular space. The central chapel mirrors the entry portico’s style, creating architectural balance. Decorative engaged half-columns function as pilasters, adding classical elegance. Locals call this sunny area “Le Spiagge” (“The Beaches”) due to its brightness. However, records show that a Jewish community existed here as early as the 13th century, forming one of the region’s most important ghettos. Homes and shops were connected by underground passageways—partially walkable today—for movement and safety. Among the ruins is a large arch thought to have marked the synagogue’s entrance. Well integrated into local life, the Jewish community enriched the town’s economy through crafts, textiles, and leatherwork. In 1547, following a financial crisis, the town repaid a debt to the Jewish community by selling land to Montefiore dell’Aso, using the river as a new border.
