Illustrious figures

Monterubbiano is the birthplace of illustrious figures from the national and international scene.
The fellow citizens known for their memorable works include the famous painter Vincenzo Pagani (1490-1568), who got trained in the workshop of his father Giovanni.
Vincenzo left several works to his hometown, including the Assumption of the Virgin (1539), which is in the Collegiate Church of S. Maria dei Letterati.
In the scientific sphere, there were some prominent scholars from Monterubbiano, namely Temistocle Calzecchi Onesti (1835-1922), inventor of the Coherer, a key element for the invention of the telegraph; his peer and friend Oreste Murani (1853-1937), a first-rate physicist and luminary for years of what today is the Politecnico in Milan; and Eugenio Centanni (1863-1942) world-renowned scientist, a native of Montotto and a great scholar of filterable viruses, tumors, in-vitro tissue cultures, then discoverer of specific and nonspecific vaccines (stomosins).
Being an intellectual of great cultural substance, the famous scholar Rosa Calzecchi Onesti (1919-2011), contributed to enhance the Italian humanistic heritage and with her translation work made the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Aeneid accessible to a wider audience.
