Il Cristo Morto

Good Friday in Monterubbiano, in even years, is made solemn by the Confraternity of Maria SS.ma del Suffragio, with the paraliturgical rite of the “three hours of agony” and the procession of the “Dead Christ”, renowned throughout the district. The Confraternity has always had the task of honoring and praying for the deceased and solemnly celebrating the memory of the Passion of the Lord. During the procession, the monumental triumphal chariot from the mid-1800s, carrying the 17th century coffin that makes the vision of Christ victorious over death suggestive, proceeds slowly along the main street illuminated only by scattered points of light hanging from the walls of the houses. The procession is composed of amateur actors dressed in Roman military costumes, women wearing mourning and carrying the symbols of the Passion, men in the black uniform of the Confraternity holding the statues of the characters of Calvary and the ancient artistic lanterns. The “C.Cusopoli” Band plays original music.

Scio’ la Pica

When spring is at its peak, on the day of Pentecost, the historical re-enactment of the Pentecost Army “Sciò la Pica” comes to life in Monterubbiano.
Although the origins of the re-enactment are not known with certainty, there are sixteenth-century documents that attest to its veracity and an origin that dates back even to the “Ver Sacrum” or the Sacred Picena Spring, thus boasting a very long uninterrupted history.
According to the tradition handed down to us by the Latin historians Pliny, Festus and Strabo, young Sabine populations – who had moved away from their home out of a sacrificial “vow”, perhaps because of a plague or famine – arrived in the Piceno region, before the expansion of Roman civilization, following the flight of the woodpecker, a bird sacred to the god Mars and commonly called Pica. The echo of these distant events still resonates today in the Monterubbiano tradition of “Sciò la Pica”.
During the historical re-enactment, some amateur actors from the Zappaterra guild “i Guazzarò,” dressed in the traditional guazzarone costume, repeat the ancient custom by chasing away the “Pica” with a cane from a cherry tree, cut for the occasion at the crack of dawn by some of the village’s young people.
Alongside this tradition is the medieval tradition of the Pentecoste Armada commemorating the time when the land of Monterubbiano was freed from the slavery of a tyrant, through the intercession of Madonna del Soccorso. The community then vowed to celebrate this date every year and “in perpetuity” with the blessing of candles, the symbol of the attending Guilds.
The Guilds refer to the arts and crafts of the time and are four: Artisti, Mulattieri, Bifolchi and Zappaterra. On the morning of Pentecost Day, a splendid procession of ladies and knights with their armies in tow -made up of young people chosen from the ancient town guilds – enters the square from the 15th-century Municipal Palace and from the various streets of the village. The climax of the festival is on Sunday afternoon with the Joust of the Ring, during which battle-trained knights lock horns in a competition that requires great skills and dexterity.
The Joust wraps up with the shouts of joy from the members of the winning guild. The following Tuesday, the “Bacchanalia”, festivities that are surely reminiscent of Picenum rituals, are held at the San Rocco gardens.

The Town of Nativity scenes

“Monterubbiano as the Town of Nativity scenes” is the brainchild of a Monterubbiano citizen who wanted to promote the town with masterpieces of nativity art made available to the community and to the many tourists who visit the town and the exhibition itself every year.
The exhibition puts on display the cribs by various artists from the area, as well as those made by schools and citizens who are pleased to display their work.

Festival of Fried Tagliatelle

The Festival of Fried Tagliatelle is usually held in the first week of August.
The event involves the whole town, including the villages nearby. The festival is also an opportunity to get together and participate in popular games and shows, and of course to eat the delicious Fried Tagliatelle: an experience not to be missed.
